Quick answer
What size is an India e-Visa photo?
The India e-Visa photo is a square JPEG, with equal height and width, of 10 KB to 1 MB, showing your full face from the front with eyes open and no glasses on a plain light or white background. Australians need a visa for India, and most apply for the e-Visa on the official Indian Visa Online website.
Australian passport holders need a visa for India, and most short-term visitors apply online for an e-Visa, such as the 30-day, 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist visa. The India e-Visa photo is a square JPEG (height and width equal) of 10 KB to 1 MB, showing your full face from the front with eyes open and no glasses, on a plain light or white background with no shadows.
India visa photo size and requirements
| Shape | Square: height and width must be equal |
|---|---|
| e-Visa file | JPEG, 10 KB to 1 MB |
| Framing | Full face, front view, head centred from top of hair to chin |
| Eyes | Open |
| Glasses | Not allowed: "without spectacles" |
| Background | Plain light or white, no borders or shadows |
| Passport page | PDF, 10 KB to 300 KB |
The e-Visa limit is 1 MB, not 300 KB
Many websites quote a 300 KB photo limit for the e-Visa. That limit belongs to the passport page PDF and the regular visa form. The e-Visa form accepts JPEG photos from 10 KB up to 1 MB.
Applying for the e-Visa
Apply only on the official Indian Visa Online website. The 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist visas allow stays of up to 180 days per calendar year. You upload your photo and a PDF of your passport bio page during the application.
Regular visas at VFS application centres
Since 23 July 2026, VFS Global has run Indian Consular Application Centres in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, and the High Commission of India says VFS is the only authorised provider. Use these centres for visa types not offered as an e-Visa, and follow the photo instructions in the online form.
Getting the square crop right
Start from a portrait photo with space around your head and shoulders, then crop it to a square with your head centred. Do not stretch an Australian passport photo into a square: it distorts your face.
How to get your India visa photo right
- Check what your trip needs. Read the guide above to see whether your India trip needs a visa or travel authorisation, and whether that application asks for a photo.
- Take a new photo. Take a recent photo facing the camera in even light, on a white or light background, ideally with someone else holding the camera. Compare it with the sample photos on this page.
- Crop it to the India size. Crop without stretching or editing, to match the requirements table. Photo size: Square, for paper forms; Digital / submission: Square JPEG upload; File: JPEG, 10 KB–1 MB.
- Apply through the official channel. Upload or attach the photo as the official website, app, embassy or visa centre asks. Its current checklist takes priority over this guide.
