About this site

An independent, plain-English guide to Australian photo requirements.

Based on official sources · last checked

AU Passport Photo explains the photo rules for Australian passports, visas, citizenship applications, driver licences, photo ID cards, student cards and overseas visas in one place, so you can get your photo right the first time.

How we write our guides

  • Every guide is based on the official requirements published by the issuing agency, such as the Australian Passport Office, the Department of Home Affairs, state and territory transport agencies, universities and foreign embassies.
  • We rewrite the rules in plain English and link to the original source at the end of each page.
  • Where official sources disagree or leave a detail out, we say so instead of guessing.
  • Practical tips are labelled as tips, so you can tell them apart from official rules.
  • Sample photos are AI-generated images of people who do not exist, made for this site to show the rules. They are not real applicants or official Australian Passport Office samples.
  • Some guides also show official images, such as Home Affairs' citizenship photo measurements, so you can check the agency's own version. Each is credited to the agency and linked to the original, and the caption names the agency's reuse licence, such as Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 for Home Affairs and Immigration New Zealand. Copies are re-encoded as WebP; the content is not altered.

How we research and update these guides

  • Official sources only. We base each guide on the rules published by the agency that issues the document, such as the Australian Passport Office, the Department of Home Affairs, state and territory agencies, universities and foreign embassies, not on other photo websites.
  • Plain-English rewrite. We rewrite the official rules in our own words, keeping the exact sizes, file limits and wording that matter, and we say so when sources disagree or leave a detail out.
  • Sources on every page. Each guide ends with a list of the official pages it is based on, so you can check the original.
  • "Last checked" date. Every guide shows when its sources were last reviewed (currently October 2026), and we update the guides when requirements or fees change.
  • Independent. We are not affiliated with any government agency, and no agency reviews or approves our content.
  • Your ratings. You can rate each guide from 1 to 5 stars at the end of the page. Ratings help us see which guides need improving.
