Is 35 × 45 mm an Australian passport photo size?

Yes. The Australian Passport Office accepts photos from 35 to 40 mm wide and 45 to 50 mm high, so the common 35 × 45 mm passport size is inside the range. What matters just as much is the head size: 32–36 mm from chin to crown, which is larger than many other countries ask for.

What is a 1200 × 1600 pixel photo?

1200 × 1600 pixels is the digital size Home Affairs prefers for citizenship and visa uploads and requires for the ImmiCard. It is a 3:4 portrait, slightly wider than a 35 × 45 mm print, so crop a little from the top and bottom rather than stretching the image.

Converting between sizes

  • Passport photo → US visa or India e-Visa: both are square, so start from the original photo with space around your head, not from a 35 × 45 mm crop.
  • Passport photo → China visa (33 × 48 mm) or Vietnam e-Visa (4 × 6 cm): these are taller and narrower, so you need extra space above and below your head.
  • Passport photo → ImmiCard: the ImmiCard asks for an 18% grey backdrop and a file under 500 KB, so take a separate photo.

How to choose and crop the right photo size

  1. Find your document. Look it up in the chart above for its print size, digital size, background, file limit and how recent the photo must be.
  2. Start from the original photo. Keep space around your head, so you can crop to a square (US visa, India e-Visa) or a taller size (China visa, Vietnam e-Visa) without stretching.
  3. Crop to the exact size. For example, 35–40 × 45–50 mm with the head 32–36 mm for an Australian passport, or 1200 × 1600 pixels for Home Affairs uploads.
  4. Check the background and file. Use the background the chart lists, such as 18% grey for the ImmiCard, and keep the file within its limit, such as 500 KB for the ImmiCard.

Resize a photo for free

To resize a photo to a size in the chart, use the free 123PhotoTool photo resizer: choose By Size, set the unit to Pixels, or millimetres for a print, and enter the width and height, for example 1200 × 1600. Crop the photo to the right shape first so your face is not stretched. Cropping and resizing are fine; retouching is not.
